What is Mirror Matter? March 11, 2008

A friend  of a friend was investigating the Tunguksa explosion. Mirror matter has been offered up as an explanation. I’ve never heard of mirror matter before (wikipedia has a very quick introduction). The idea, basically, is to restore CP as a fundamental symmetry of our world. And, because the mirror matter would only weakly interact with our world, it might be a good dark matter candidate. There are other predictable effects as well — all having to do with astro observations. And there are even papers in real journals about it (but not many; it never seemed to really catch on the way some theories do).

All good so far. So how come I’ve never heard of it? Do I just live in a hole? Or is it because it is really only testable in an astrophysics experiment and I’ve not paid them enough attention?

Your live a quarter or an eighth in a hole. The idea of mirror matter has been around for years, but although never disproved or even made less believable, its never become popular. There are around 50 papers, and 1 PhD thesis on mirror matter, oh yes and Robert Foots, popularist book ShadowlandsRobert. compared with the tens of thousands on superstrings and supersymmetry.

Having read most of them, i think i prefer mirror matter to cold
dark matter. This might be because of the SF fun of imagining
the galaxy is 80% full of invisible stars that radiate there own
mirror light. But mirror matter avoids having a dense cusp of CDM in the middle of galaxies, and prevents itself from collapsing by the heat of the stars.

Thanks! I like the idea of mirror light.

I have no commet on above mirror matter. But I like to say about “space mirror”. From the ancestral time the world space research established on blind theory. We although demand that we have discovered lots of mysteries viz. milk ways, galaxies, nebulas, white drafts, black holes etc., in real they are creation of space mirror. SPACE MIRROR is the truth and hidden mystery of the space. Since we are unknown about space mirror, our research has diverted from original truth and we have spent lots of time and money behind the false truth.
Therefore it invites to visit http://www.spacemirrormystery.com and do best for prosperous space research.

Pradipta – your theory is vague and lacks scientific credibility or thought. why would such a mirror exist? how could it exist? how can images of galaxies be explained by reflections of non-galaxies? where can ultraviolet or X-ray radiation come from? are the X-rays also reflected? what is the mirror made of?

In attempting to explain one thing you have raised more questions that you have answered and you not have answered any of your questions. You have not considered the massive backlog of scientific research that got us to where we are, nor have you applied the scientific method to your theory. You have not even suggested a method to test your theory which is the ultimate scientific method!
