Nostalgia December 3, 2006

One of the great things about subscribing to netflix is you can go back and watch those old TV series that you heard about, but never actually saw. For me those currently include Moonlighting (holy cow, Bruce with hair!?) and Northern Exposure.

I watched the pilot for Moonlighting earlier this evening and there was one scene where Bruce was looking through reams computer print out. And it was the old green-and-white banded 132 column printout! I remember standing beside a printer that produced that. It was a lot bigger than I am now, and it made the whole floor shake. It printed all 132 characters on a line at once with a big crunch. In those days we didn’t use graphics to draw histograms; we did it with characters. I wonder if that code exists in modern histogramming packages (like ROOT)?

There are some things about the old days I definitely don’t miss!
