Clever Hackers! November 28, 2006

Posted by gordonwatts in computers.

One of the computer guys I work with keeps track of how often our Linux servers are attacked. He says the current rate of attack on one of our web servers is about 1-per second, sometimes bursts of 3-4 in a second. About half are password attempts: they use a username and try to guess a password to get into the system. But check this out: most of the usernames they try seem to have been culled from the people in the department. They took the time to get a list of names associated with the department! Wow! Too bad these clever folks aren’t spending their time searching for the Higgs!

Hehehe… what is there worth stealing on a Fermilab computer anyway? If you knew enough physics to understand what you were taking, I’d think you could get it just by asking nicely!
