CIMG6694Mark McDermott (on the right) passed away yesterday morning. He was first an atomic physicist, and then later in his career the chair of the UW physics department. I arrived here after he was done being chair, however. He remained deeply involved in departmental affairs right up until he retired last year. He was a good friend of my wife’s so I ended up getting to know him well. He and Lillian, his wife and another member of the department, invited us over for dinner often (he prepared a mean (good) slab of salmon).

Bye Mark. You will be missed.
