Why Is This Web Site Dead?? October 16, 2006Posted by gordonwatts in physics life, travel.
I am going to Hawaii in two weeks to give a few D0 talks at the American Physical Society’s Division of Particles and Fields meeting. Pretty cool, huh? Yes, it is.
Today I was trying to do some research and the web site was down. This is a big conference — so that was a little surprising. Paula and I made a few jokes about it. Only later did we figure out why it was down:
A strong earthquake struck the Hawaiian Islands early Sunday, shaking residents and tourists from their sleep, knocking out electrical power to several areas and setting off a landslide that rained boulders and other debris on the major highway of the largest island.
Now Paula and I just feel like jerks. Fortunately it sounds like no one was killed and there were only minor injuries. Could have been quite a bit worse. I’ll also take this to mean that a) the meeting is still on and b) the hotels around will be empty because everyone is busy canceling their trip! I wonder if we can upgrade to a four-star cheap???
