It’s Getting Busy Again… June 12, 2006

Posted by gordonwatts in physics life.

The past couple of months on my trips to Fermilab it has been quiet out here at DZERO. I couldn't quite put my finger on it then — but I just figured it out. With beam arriving again there are lots of pages "Will xxx please call the control room!" and "xxx, please call the control room now!" It is nice to be around an experiment that is alive. You can tell what has gone wrong just by listening to who is paging, who is being paged, and how urgent the voice is. Sometimes you can predict when you'll be paged as they work their way though a call list. 🙂

The ATLAS control room and main buliding are quite far apart — no the same building complex as they are here at DZERO. I wonder if the phycisists working on analysis will be at all aware of the hour-by-hour operation in the CR (other than those who have their pagers go off!).
