This line appeared in the day shift report (which ended about 30 minutes ago):
L0 installed ..the work has been completed at around 15:00 this afternoon.
That is amazing news! Hopefully I'll get pictures back from Fermi and can post more of the installation. Also, this is probably just mechanical installation. Next will be electrical and the dreaded smoke test. 😉
Layer 0 ("L0" to good friends) is the new inner layer of Silicon detector that DZERO is installing. It will give us another space-point on our charged particle tracks. This extra measurement should give us better resolution on the coordinates where the track originated from. This is key to our physics because it allows us to tell the difference between particles that decay immediately and particles that drift some distance before decaying. The difference is one of the better ways of separating backgrounds (like W boson production) from signal (like Higgs and top quark production).
