The LHC is too big to fail! November 17, 2008

A friend of mine and I were discussing the bailout. The consensus seems to be that large companies – like GM and Chrysler – are too big to fail.
Can we say the same thing about a science experiment like the LHC?
Could we apply for extra science funding under the bailout program?

Or perhaps not big enough… You could have bought, what, 100 LHC’s with the bailout money?
wasn’t the SSC also sort of bigish?
Though, disturbingly, I think we’ve spent less on it than we did on the SSC. Of course, Kevin, that was the key – we had nothing built when it got canceled.
I want to see a cage match with ITER.
Ha! Now that would be entertaining!
