Why Aren’t These Election Results Updating!? November 4, 2008

Here is how pathetic I am. I had the NYTime’s election monitor web-app up and running for 40 minutes before I realized it was pointless… polls don’t open for another 7 hours! And yet I would keep lookup up at it wistfully imagining it turning blue coast-to-coast.

How pathetic is that!? Yeah, I agree.

[...] There aren’t any results yet. Turn off the computer. [...]

Turn off the computer, and go do something else.

Go outside, take a nap, sort some coins, solve the excess muon problem (http://www.nature.com/news/2008/081103/full/news.2008.1203.html), beat the internet (the end guy is really hard), vote (again), catch air molecules, go do anything else.

Heh. Riiiight. Not possible, I tell you!!!

I need to look more carefully at that paper; I’ve heard just abou teverything about it via gossip, but I need to sit down and read it. Perhaps I can turn it in to a 1/2 lecture?

4. Gordon Stangler - November 4, 2008

It’s seventy pages. You could turn it into ten lectures.

5. gordonwatts - November 4, 2008

No… I have a feeling about that paper… I think it will be shorter than that. :(

6. Gordon Stangler - November 4, 2008

I hope it is something exotic, such as dark matter interactions, although I get the feeling it is something much more mundane. You could spice up your lecture with this: http://arxiv.org/abs/0810.5660
;)
Do you think D0 will show the same “spectre”?

7. gordonwatts - November 4, 2008

That would be nice, but I think your second guess is the right one.

8. gordonwatts - November 4, 2008

Yeah — I’d have to understand that paper you linked to first! ;-) And I’m teaching in about 10 minutes. So perhaps not!!

9. Lisa Smith - November 4, 2008

… and thus Stangler masterfully shifted your attention away from the polls! :-)

10. gordonwatts - November 4, 2008

Heh! He did, with the help of class! The web pages this year are amazing; I’m going to be spending all my time slicing and dicing the data rather than getting anything done!!

11. Lisa Smith - November 4, 2008

BTW – You think that’s pathetic? For some reason I was moved to tears last night watching all the election hype on the 11 o’clock news. And I’m being sincere, not sarcastic… I guess it has been one helluva race.

12. gordonwatts - November 4, 2008

It has been long — and for once I feel like I came out of it feeling like I still liked one of the candidates. Which makes this much better than it has been the last several times around! Can’t wait… just spend the last 20 minutes getting used to all the controls on the various web pages to watch the results!

I don’t know why I just used that cheesey abbreviation “helluva”. It’s not like it’s that much harder to write it out!
